What is image metadata?
Metadata is information embedded inside the image file, invisible in the image itself but read by software, operating systems and platforms.
The most common standards are:
- EXIF (Exchangeable Image File Format): technical data like camera, lens, ISO, date
- IPTC: editorial information like title, description, keywords, copyright
- XMP: modern Adobe standard that combines and extends EXIF and IPTC
What's stored in metadata?
When you take a photo with a modern phone, the generated JPEG file can contain:
- Exact date and time of the photo
- GPS coordinates (latitude and longitude) — where the photo was taken
- Phone and camera model
- Exposure settings (ISO, aperture, shutter speed)
- Device manufacturer
Privacy impact
Many people post photos with GPS metadata without knowing it. When posting a photo of your home on social media, the file may contain exactly where you are.
Solution: remove or overwrite GPS data before posting. Our tool lets you edit GPS coordinates directly.
SEO impact
Search engines like Google read image metadata. Adding:
- Descriptive title: helps understand the image context
- Description: more context for indexing
- Keywords (IPTC): thematic relevance
- Copyright/Author: important for protected images
Well-described images have a better chance of appearing in Google Images, which is a relevant source of traffic.
